Learning music doesn’t make children smarter, study finds
A new study found that contrary to popular belief, learning music does not make children smarter. Many parents believe that taking up an instrument will help their children have higher IQs and do better in school, but according to researchers, this is not true. They say that there is no link between music lessons and IQ or grades.
To understand the effect of music lessons on children’s intelligence, researchers analyzed 54 previous studies. The studies were published from 1986 to 2019 and involved more than 6,900 children. The researchers found that children’s intelligence and academic skills stayed the same even after learning music. Music lessons did not make children smarter even if the lessons continued for a long time.
According to one of the researchers, many common ideas about how to make children smarter are actually misconceptions. He said that it’s pointless to teach children music with the goal of making them smarter. However, he explained that musical training can have benefits, like improving children’s social skills and self-esteem.

Rare horse cloned at California zoo
San Diego Zoo Global has successfully cloned a Przewalski’s [shuh-VAHL-skeez] horse, an endangered type of wild horse. The animal was cloned using the DNA of a Przewalski’s horse that was cryopreserved in 1980. The newborn horse was named Kurt in honor of Dr. Kurt Benirschke [be-NEERSH-kuh], one of the creators of San Diego Zoo Global’s animal conservation program.
Przewalski’s horses are originally from Mongolia. They have distinct muscular bodies, and they’re usually a beige or reddish-brown color. Przewalski’s horses are considered endangered and were once extinct in the wild, but breeding programs are helping to revive the species. Now, over 350 Przewalski’s horses run free in Mongolia.
San Diego Zoo Global partnered with a wildlife conservation group and a cloning company for the project. According to Ryan Phelan, director of the cloning company, Kurt’s birth is an important step for the conservation of Przewalski’s horses. Phelan’s company is also trying to revive other endangered or extinct animals, including the woolly mammoth.
