Opinion: I don’t think that companies should ask employees to do overtime. When I graduated from university, my father gave me some advice. ‘You should work to live, not live to work,’ he told me, and I couldn’t agree more. When I’m at the office, I give it my all, but I refuse to do overtime. I don’t care if it’s paid overtime or not – my time is more valuable to me than money.

Opinion: I think it’s fine to ask employees to do overtime within reason. I’m a tax accountant, so some periods of the year are much busier for me than others. When the busy season starts, it’s common to be at the office over 55 hours a week. Do I love it? No, but I buckle down and do my best. Doing some overtime every once in a while won’t hurt you. And besides, it’s nice to have some extra cash.
