I’m not a fan of making English the official company language.

私は、英語を職場の公用語にすることは好きではありません。

I’ve studied English for several years, but I don’t feel confident speaking it in important meetings.

数年間英語を勉強していますが、重要な会議で英語を話す自信はありません。

I don’t think that companies should ask employees to do overtime.

会社は従業員に残業を求めるべきでないと思います。

U.K. company asks customers to give away old clothes

U.K. company Marks & Spencer (M&S) is working with the charity Oxfam on an initiative to have customers donate old clothes. Customers can bring their old clothes to M&S stores or to Oxfam offices. If they donate at least one M&S clothing item, they will receive a £5 (about ¥700) voucher for M&S clothes or home products.

M&S started this initiative back in 2008 because they wanted customers to support a good cause and dispose of old items properly. According to Oxfam’s latest report, Oxfam and M&S stores have received more than 28 million clothes. After customers donate them, the old clothes are recycled or re-sold.

This is not M&S’ only charity initiative. In addition to clothing and home goods, the company also sells food products, and in 2017, they started donating their unsold chilled food to U.K. charities. These food products include meat, dairy and packed meals. M&S started this initiative to make sure that unsold food is not wasted.

Kenyan gas firm helps poor families

M-gas, a cooking gas company in Kenya, has launched a cheap prepaid gas service. The service includes a stove and gas tank with an electronic meter. The meter shows the price that the customer paid and the amount of gas that the customer can still use. Gas tanks are usually expensive, but M-gas is different because customers don’t need to pay for the whole tank. Families can make small payments for the gas that they will need that day. Some families choose to pay for a very small amount of gas before they cook each meal.

Before the new service’s launch, around 900 million people in Africa cooked with dirty fuels such as wood and charcoal. The use of dirty fuels is a major cause of air pollution. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), almost half a million deaths in the region are caused by air pollution. In addition, a high demand for wood and charcoal can cause deforestation, another major problem.

According to M-gas, their service is the perfect solution to the two problems. Through the service, customers can cook without smoke. No smoke means less air pollution. Additionally, because there is no need to use wood or charcoal anymore, local deforestation can also be slowed down.
